About
JAMES BARTHOLOMEW RSMA
“Everyone sees the world around us in such an individual way. When the artists interpretation of a landscape resonates with that of the viewer, it can be a powerful connection.”
Since 1992, James has worked as a contemporary landscape and seascape painter. He has a strong reputation within the British contemporary art market and is a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. His paintings bring energy and spontaneity to the surface through sweeping strokes and gestural marks.
“I am fascinated by the interplay between a subject and light and how changing weather can alter the essence of something so completely. I want to capture the fleeting relationship between light, movement and place.”

James has been a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) since 2002 and his work has received several notable awards including the Charles Pears Award, the Kenneth Denton Award, The Laing Art Prize and the Peter Scott Award. Commissioning clients include Waitrose, Winalot, the BBC and the Sunday Times.
Alongside his own gallery (Mill House Gallery in Lancashire – now in it’s 27th year), James has been represented by several leading UK galleries.
He also exhibits regularly at the Federation of British Artists’ society shows. His work is found in private and corporate collections around the world.
